:
One of DTU Electro's research focus is on the optical properties of semiconductor quantum dots and the application of them for quantum information processing and quantum internet. Our research employs low-temperature (<4K) photoluminescence (PL), photoluminescence excitation (PLE), and resonant excitation (RE) techniques, which poses a series of stringent requirements for the cryostat that cools our sample to the desirable temperature range. Requirements for the cryostat system are: • Closed cycle cooling via pulse-tube technology to guarantee operation independent from liquid helium logistics • Base temperature below 1.8 K, fully automated temperature control between 1.8 and 300K, preferably via touchscreen • Temperature stability better than 10mK (below 10K) • A high-Magnetic field (9T) with a homogeneity of 0.1% over 10 mm (diameter spherical vol-ume) must be available at the full temperature range (1.8K – 300K) • Top loading cryostat to allow fast turnaround times while maintaining the magnet cold and operational • Low drifts to allow for long time measurements at any sample location • Automated temperature and magnetic field control via touch panel or/and PC • Cryogenic positioners with sub-nm resolution for focusing and sample scanning • Free-beam optical access to the sample with AR coated windows (exchangeable) • Preferably compatible with a removable, optical breadboard add-on for the cryostat which includes breadboard of at least 450 mm x 450 mm x 12.7 mm The cryostat system must be compatible with different types of inserts for microscopy. This requires: • Bore size of at least 49 mm to fit inserts with nanopositioners with at least 5 mm travel range in x and y and ~6 mm in z. • When a position is reached after a series of steps, zero voltage can be applied to the piezo, which minimizes the noise and drift caused by any external electronics. • The temperature control of the sample in the insert must be possible via the software interface of the cryostat itself, to allow for seamless operation • Extremely low vibrating environment to guarantee measurements at the nanometer level. DTU Electro has been searching the market for a closed-cycle cryostat with support for a strong magnet. We identified a list of potential suppliers and reached out to them. Upon comparison, we realized that attocube attoDRY2100 is the only company that offers a system that fulfills all of our key specifications for experimental stability and repeatability. attoDRY2100 cryostat has the following specs/properties: • The attoDRY2100 is a top loading closed-cycle cryostat designed to include a superconducting magnet for high magnetic fields investigations. • The system offers a temperature range of 1.8 to 300K. • The temperature stability of the system is 10mK near base temperature, the only system in the market that satisfies our requirement. • A tunable magnetic field of up to 9 T in z direction at the entire temperature range. • Vibration amplitudes in vertical direction of less than 0.15 nm RMS (bandwidth of 200 Hz) with the pulse tube cooler running can be achieved. The only system in the market that satisfies our requirement. • The drift of a system consisting of an attoDRY unit and an optical confocal microscope has been measured to be less than 10 nm/h. The only system in the market that satisfies our requirement. • The sample space of the cryostat has a diameter of 49.7 mm. The system can be operated for several weeks and months at the base temperature of the magnet. This makes it possible to measure efficiently over a long period of time. Customized insert • The lower part of the 2” insert consists of a stable titanium housing. This makes it possible to achieve even better vibration values, as this housing can accommodate the somewhat larger and stiffer ANPx311 positioners, which also have a higher travel range than other positioners. • Attocube systems is the only company that can offer such an insert, and all parts come from a single company. This ensures that the system is perfectly harmonised. Nanopositioners ANP and ANS • The customized measurement insert comes fully equipped with xyz nanopositioners and scanners. Attocube systems holds the patents on these compact and stable nanopositioners which enable movement over several mm in nm steps (Patent WO 2006131089 and EP 0 823 738 B1). The nanopositioners have the following key features of great importance to the planned experiments: • The linear positioning stages ANPx311/RES/LT and ANPz102/RES/LT provide a travel range of 6 mm in XY-direction and 5 mm in Z-direction with steps sizes down to 50 nm at 300 K. • The fine positioning units ANSxy100lr/LT provide a scan range in two dimensions of at least 50 μm x 50 μm @ 300 K and 30 μm x 30 μm @ 4 K. • When a position is reached after a series of steps, zero voltage can be applied to the piezo, which minimizes the noise and drift caused by any external electronics. • Only low to moderate voltages are needed to drive the positioners. In attocube systems’ positioners, piezos with maximum 60 V or 150 V are used. As a consequence, shielding for high voltages is not necessary and cabling and connectors rated for low voltages can be used. As far as we know, attocube systems is the only company that has been able to prove the values on the basis of measurements, especially when a bandwidth is specified. We can therefore ensure to receive a complete and functioning system. To the best of our knowledge, the combination ‘at-toDRY2100 with 9T magnet and removable breadboard addon’ and ‘customized measurement insert with customized housing which allows attocube's ANPx311 positioner to be used for even better vibration values’ from the attocube systems AG is the only solution on the market that offers all of the benefits and thus meets the key requirements of our lab. No other company worldwide can provide a complete system as outlined above.
